Portrait of Marra Spallone

about

Marra Spallone is an artist practicing in many disciplines. She strives to explore the depths of her mind and the world around her, which drives her to create works of dance, music, film, and everything in between. She has always been an improviser in all parts of her life and brings that into her creative processes to find the unfiltered and unedited. Marra is drawn to pushing the comfort zones of herself and her collaborators to create fresh, authentic work.

Marra is a recent graduate of SUNY Purchase, where she received her BFA in Dance with a concentration in Composition. There she has performed in works by Marcel Gbeffa, Cain Coleman, Dual Rivet, and Doug Varone. Also at Purchase she connected with Lucas Madrid, Anthony Atristain, and Christian McCarthy to form the rock band Not a Threat, in which she is the lead singer and co-writer. She is currently based in Hartford, CT.

Marra's creative work centers around the things that she wants the most in life — whether that is human connection, a sense of belonging, justice, an apology, or to reminisce on simpler times. She works closely with her collaborators using writing prompts, visualization, and discussions to tap into memories and emotions. Her choreography is not so much concerned with virtuosity or being highly physical, and is more so musical and emerging from the soul. Marra creates for human beings, and is passionate about how live performance has the ability to touch people.
